VA Funding Fee Refund After a Disability Rating

October 14, 2026

Yes, a refund may be possible. The key test is the effective date of your VA service-connected disability compensation.

That effective date must be before the closing date of your VA loan. The date printed on your award decision is not the main test. A later disability rating alone does not guarantee a refund.

Florida Veterans follow the same federal VA rule as borrowers nationwide. The refund may matter if you paid the funding fee at closing or financed it into the loan.

Compare the two dates first

Check the effective date on your VA compensation award. Then check the closing date on your signed Closing Disclosure.

VA says a refund may be available when a disability claim was pending at closing and VA later awards service-connected compensation. The compensation effective date must be retroactive to a date before closing.

For example, assume you closed on a St. Petersburg home on April 15. Your award later shows an effective date of March 1.

That timing may support a refund request.

If the effective date is May 1, the date is after the April 15 closing. That timing generally does not support a refund for that loan.

Use the dates as your first screen. Do not rely only on when you received the award letter.

When a later rating may not qualify

VA says a proposed or memorandum rating issued after closing does not create a refund right by itself. The funding fee still applies in that situation.

Other exemption rules may apply in different cases. Examples include some surviving spouses and some Veterans who qualify for compensation but receive retirement or active-duty pay instead.

Review your award information and closing date together. If you are still shopping, read our guide to the VA funding-fee exemption in Florida. That article covers checking for an exemption before closing.

Gather these documents

VA processing guidance lists documents that can support a refund review:

  • VA disability award letter, if available. It should show the award and effective date.
  • Signed Closing Disclosure. This shows the closing details and funding fee charge.
  • Current mortgage statement. This helps identify the current loan and mortgage holder.

You should also have your VA loan number and current contact information ready. Keep copies of everything you send.

These documents do not guarantee a refund. VA may verify information in its own records or request more information.

Where to start your request

  1. Compare the dates. Match the VA compensation effective date with the loan closing date.
  2. Contact your current mortgage holder. Use your latest mortgage statement to find the right company.
  3. Ask about the VA funding fee refund process. Ask where to send your documents and who handles the next step.
  4. Contact VA if needed. VA lists the Regional Loan Center number as 877-827-3702. The listed hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
  5. Track your request. Keep the date, representative name, and any reference number.

Lenders and servicers use VA's Funding Fee Payment System for funding-fee corrections and refund requests. Borrowers generally do not use that system directly.

Do not assume there is a standard deadline

The reviewed VA consumer guidance does not state one universal borrower deadline for every refund request.

Still, contact VA or your mortgage holder after you receive the award notice. Early follow-up may make it easier to locate the loan records and resolve questions.

Do not count on a set processing time. Timing can depend on the loan record and document review.

How the refund may be paid

For refunds issued on or after July 1, 2019, VA says the refund is paid directly to the Veteran, regardless of the current loan balance.

VA does not automatically require the refund to reduce your mortgage principal. You may choose to send the money to your mortgage servicer for a principal payment instead.

Ask your servicer how it wants that payment submitted. Follow its instructions for applying money to principal.

A refund does not automatically rewrite your original Closing Disclosure or change the original loan terms.

Keep the refund separate from a refinance decision

A possible funding-fee refund is separate from a refinance decision. It does not make a refinance necessary.

If you are considering a VA Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan, or IRRRL, check your current funding-fee exemption status before closing the new loan.

Read our Florida VA IRRRL guide for basic refinance costs. If you are buying, see our St. Petersburg VA home loan buyer guide and VA homebuying checklist.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking only the decision date. Check the compensation effective date.
  • Assuming every later rating qualifies. Timing and the type of VA determination matter.
  • Calling only the original lender. The current mortgage holder may handle the request after a servicing transfer.
  • Sending incomplete records. Include the award letter, Closing Disclosure, and current mortgage statement when requested.
  • Counting on the refund before approval. Treat it as possible future money, not available cash.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund if my disability rating came after closing?

Possibly. The compensation effective date must be before the loan closing date. A rating issued after closing does not qualify by itself.

Do I need to still own the home?

VA's public guidance focuses on the exemption and effective-date rules. If the home was sold, refinanced, or transferred, contact VA or the current mortgage holder with your loan details.

Will VA apply the refund to my mortgage balance?

For refunds issued on or after July 1, 2019, VA says it pays the Veteran directly. You may then choose to make a separate principal payment.

What if my mortgage company changed?

Check your latest mortgage statement for the current mortgage holder or servicer. VA also directs borrowers to contact a VA Regional Loan Center.
